Samsung Galaxy Nexus Bags Android 4.3 Update And Joins Google Nexus 4

Google?s older Galaxy Nexus receives the official Android Jelly Bean 4.3 update on Monday. Samsung?s Nexus phone follows the LG Nexus 4 and the ASUS Nexus 7. ?

JULY 30, 2013, 9:08 PM. Article by Raphael Labuguen.

The old, but still decent Google Galaxy Nexus by Samsung is the latest smartphone to receive the Android 4.3 mobile operating system upgrade. Our own smartphone with build number JWR66V with baseband version I9250XXLJ1 fetched the update on Monday. See the image below this post. And similar to Nexus 4, the system update for the Galaxy Nexus is more than 160MB big with similar features such as improved performance, TRIM support, virtual surround sound, enhancement to battery life and more. You can see the full list of Android Jelly Bean 4.3 features here. The update is available on unlocked Galaxy Nexus only, and no word yet about the update for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus variant with Long Term Evolution.

If your Galaxy Nexus is still not updated to Android 4.3, you can ?force download? the file by locating the phone?s ?Google Services Framework? app located at the Apps Section on the Settings native Android application. Force stop the GSF app, clear the app?s data, and open the system update page on the About Phone tab. If successful, Google?s servers will notify you with the system update. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will automatically reboot and initiate the update process. Galaxy Nexus on Android 4.3 is smoother, offers better display (color calibration), faster response and better apps support.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is powered by a dual-core TI OMAP micro-processor clocked at 1.2GHz, PowerVR SGX540 GPU and features 16GB of on-board storage. The older Google handset also features a back-facing 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing video chat camera and boasts a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display with resolution of?720 x 1280 pixels.

NATIVE trees have been hand-delivered to Somerset and Lockyer schools by Mayor Graeme Lehmann as part of National Tree Day celebrations.

A variety of hardy natives was donated to almost 20 schools across the Somerset and Lockyer regions by Somerset Regional Council and passionate environmentalists.

Each school received 24 plants to celebrate National Schools Tree Day last Friday.

Cr Lehmann said it was a pleasure to help educate students on the importance of the environment.

He also visited schools at Fernvale and Toogoolawah on Thursday and took the opportunity to plant a native tree with students at Toogoolawah State School.

Torstar says print revenue to stay under pressure

(Reuters) - Torstar Corp , owner of Canada's largest daily newspaper by circulation, warned that print revenue would remain under pressure in the second half of the year, after reporting a fifth straight fall in quarterly profit.

The Toronto Star owner also said earnings in its book publishing business, which includes the Harlequin series of romantic novels, will be moderately lower in the second half than 2012. It earned C$212.8 million from the business in the second half of 2012, according to regulatory filings.

"In the media operations, print advertising revenues are likely to continue to be under pressure," Chief Executive David Holland said in a statement.

Revenue in the media business fell 8 percent to C255.4 million in the second quarter, largely due to print advertising revenue declines at the newspapers.

The company, which is looking to erect a paywall for the Toronto Star as both readers and advertisers shift online, said it expects digital revenue from existing properties to rise for the rest of the year.

Digital revenue fell 10.1 percent for the media business in the second quarter.

Net income fell to C$18 million ($17.5 million), or 23 Canadian cents per share, from C$32.6 million, or 41 Canadian cents per share, a year earlier. On an adjusted basis, the company earned 29 Canadian cents per share.

Operating revenue slipped 7.6 percent to C$354.9 million.

Analysts on average had expected Torstar to earn 36 Canadian cents per share on revenue of C$357 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Torstar, which expects to save C$23.8 million from the restructuring activities it undertook through the end of the second quarter, said cost cuts would continue.

Torstar cut 105 jobs in the first quarter and 260 jobs in 2012.

Monogamy evolved as a mating strategy: New research indicates that social monogamy evolved as a result of competition

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Social monogamy, where one breeding female and one breeding male are closely associated with each other over several breeding seasons, appears to have evolved as a mating strategy, new research reveals. It was previously suspected that social monogamy resulted from a need for extra parental care by the father.

Web Hosting Information Everyone Should Know | Content for Reprint

Author: Casie Fuchs | Total views: 63 Comments: 0
Word Count: 1135 Date:

A host is generally a server or rack of servers that "hosts" the files composing your website via the Internet. Companies usually offer various packages at different rates for their hosting services, but it's important that you make a choice with your future company in mind, and not just saving a few bucks at the moment.

Look at your web hosting site to figure out what kind of websites they offer. Some free hosting sites don't allow you to add your own unique language scripts. If your site requires scripting to run, you're better off searching for some good paid shared hosting.

When choosing your web hosting service, do not rely on someone's recommendation, or only on the info you've read online. Most services have affiliate programs and the people recommending the service may not have any direct experience with it. You should take more than recommendations into consideration when choosing your web host.

It used to be more expensive, but in today's world, it is entirely possible to manage several domains without spending too much money. This helps your business grow, and it helps you reach targeted customers. Know what your options are as far as multiple domain hosting is concerned. This will give you a huge extra boost!

Choose a web host that charges a low monthly fee. You can usually find a quality web host for between $5 and $10 per month. You may also be able to save money by paying for 12, 18 or 24 months of service at one time, instead of paying for web hosting services on a monthly basis.

Consider how much downtime the web host will have when looking for one. These downtimes vary from 10% to .000001%. This means that there could be hours of downtime per week or as little as seconds. Select a host with the lowest amount of downtime that you can find.

Before choosing a web host provider, check to see how fast files can be uploaded or downloaded from their server. If this information is not readily available from them directly, use a "website speed test" service who can run a test for you. Realize, however, that accuracy varies and can be different depending on the time of day.

Make sure that you factor in the price of a host when selecting one. If you've ever heard that something is just too good to be true, then it likely is. This definitely applies to web hosting. You shouldn't purchase a web-hosting plan that is really cheap. When a plan is extremely low in cost, then it likely won't provide high-quality hosting. Therefore, purchase a service that provides a reasonable price for the quality that you expect.

When you are choosing a web hosting company, it is important that you rely on more than just one or two pieces of advice on a recommendation. Many recommendations are from people who haven't even experienced the web hosting company that they are recommending. Choose wisely, do your research, and know many things about the company that you choose.

Look for a company that offers an "uptime guarantee." Uptime is also known as the amount of time that a server is online for, as opposed to down, for service or maintenance. A reliable web host should be able to offer some sort of guarantee that your site will be available at least 98 percent of the time, with superior web hosts able to offer 99.9 percent uptime.

Find out what happens to your content in case you wish to cancel your subscription. You should be given a few days to save everything if you wish to switch hosts and you should not be charged any cancellation fees. You should also beware of signing for a contract that specifies you cannot cancel your plan.

Find out what kind of other websites your service is hosting. If you notice that a lot of spammy or unreliable websites are hosted alongside with yours, most search engines will be more likely to rank your site lower because of this. Remember that your business will be associated with the host you choose.

Make sure that you choose a host that has support 24/7. You don't want to run across a problem or an issue and not be able to get a hold of somebody quickly. This could harm your business or personal en devours. Once you've picked a host, try calling them at an odd hour to see is support service is available.

Some web hosting sites are free and can help you save money and cut costs, but these usually come with a catch. Using a free web host means that there will be advertising on your site. Also, you won't have as much space for your site's storage. If you want to create a professional-looking site, choose a paying host.

Before choosing your web hosting service, determine whether or not you will need to use web templates. Many hosts will provide easy to use templates for building your site without the need for HTML knowledge or a professional designer. If you need this service, then choose a host that give a wide range of templates.

Before picking a web host, check to see if they have some type of money-back guarantee, or even a trial special where you can test their service. There should be a way to get your investment and money back if you decide their hosting service is not for you. Most hosting companies will give you around 30 days.

There's no question that free web hosting is useful to some people. It depends on the reason for your website. If you plan on doing business online, use the tips above to help choose a web hosting company that can give you fast, reliable service so that you can build a strong business foundation upon which to grow your sales.

Judge denies jury's sequester in Bulger trial

By Sophia Rosenbaum, NBC News

The jurors in the federal murder and racketeering trial of James ?Whitey? Bulger trial won't be sequestered during their deliberations, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Judge Denise Casper ruled from the bench that she was ?not inclined to inconvenience these jurors,? the Boston Globe reported, saying the 11th-hour request was too much of a burden to bear for a jury in its eighth week of hearing the case.

Defense attorneys filed a motion late Sunday to sequester the jury to prevent them from further "prejudicial" media coverage. In the six-page document, they argued that the trial has garnered ?extensive publicity? and has an ?unprecedented level of media coverage.?

Tuesday's court session was abbreviated because defense attorney J.W. Carney had another case to attend. During the four-hour session, the prosecution finished their cross examination of the first defense witness to take the stand, former FBI supervisor Robert Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick told the jury on Monday that he did not believe Bulger had been a productive FBI informant as prosecutors contend.?

In its cross examination, the prosecution continually questioned Fitzpatrick about inconsistencies between Fitzpatrick?s testimony, what he has said in other court proceedings, and what Fitzpatrick wrote in his own book, the Globe reported.

Bulger, 83, has pleaded not guilty to all charges, though his attorneys have admitted their client was a drug dealer, extortionist, loan shark and "organized criminal."?

But what his lawyers have argued most vociferously is that Bulger was not, as prosecutors contend, an FBI informant.?

The defense has said it will call as many as 14 people to the witness stand but has not said whether or not Bulger will testify.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Mexico's navy vice admiral brutally slaughtered in ambush

Two other people were injured in the brutal shooting in an area where a fight between rival drug cartels has caused a new outburst of violence.

The state prosecutors' office said the attack on Vice Adm. Carlos Miguel Salazar happened on a dirt road near the town of Churintzio.

The motive was unclear, but Salazar is the top navy commander in the neighboring Pacific coastal state of Jalisco.

Attacks by Mexican cartels on military personnel have occurred, but are relatively rare.

Salazar may be the highest military officer slain since the government began an offensive against the cartels in late 2006.

Navy officials would not confirm whether Salazar was on duty, but Marines are known to carry out operations in Michoacan, but in a smaller capacity than the federal police and army.

Alejandro Arellano, spokesman for Michoacan attorney general's office, said Salazar's driver apparently took the dirt road because the main highway had been closed.

The vehicle was apparently forced to take a detour and men armed with high-powered rifles opened fire while it was between two villages.

Helicopters of the army, navy and federal police and more than 200 security officers and emergency workers converged on the scene after the shooting.

The attackers had not been located, but officials said forces searching the area found an abandoned car suspected of being used by the gunmen.

The navy is considered the most successful Mexican force in the drug war, with marines proving to be the best trained and least corruptible.

Marines killed the head of the Beltran Leyva cartel in the city of Cuernavaca in 2009 and captured Zetas cartel leader Miguel Angel Trevino near the U.S.-Mexico border two weeks ago.

Navy officers have rarely been targeted by the gangs despite clearly setting their eyes on drug criminals.

However, since last week, gunmen apparently working for the Knights Templar cartel have been staging a series of attacks on federal police convoys, killing at least four officers and wounding five others.

Innovative ideas for a struggling new business ... - Jamaica Gleaner

Business Wise with Yaneek Page

QUESTION: I'm a hairstylist who lived in the US for many years and returned to Jamaica in 2012 to open my own salon. Unfortunately, things have not been good. I don't have enough customers to break even and I'm frustrated. My location in Kingston is good, but parking is limited. I have printed business cards, flyers, and did BB broadcasts. The response - not good. How can I get more customers?

- C., Kingston

BUSINESSWISE: Don't be disheartened. You are in a field that has good potential in terms of scalability, sustainability, and profitability, but to move forward you need to develop a strategic plan and start executing.

The plan will outline your vision and medium-term goals, and exactly how you will achieve those goals.

It forces you to answer questions such as: Where do I want to be? Where am I now? What do I need to do to realistically bridge the gap? What is my unique selling proposition (USP)? How can I navigate the economic environment and other external challenges?

Before you delve into the strategic planning process, you must ensure you are operating lawfully. You first need a licence from the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation.

To apply, you will need a health certificate, proof of training/certification, certified photos and to pay fees of J$3,000 per year.

The requirements are slightly different if you are operating a salon. You can find detailed information at www.ksacorp.gov.jm.

Another statutory obligation is registering your business/salon name at the Companies Office of Jamaica. This opens the way for lawful advertising and allows you to protect your business name which is critical to your strategic plan.

You can register as a sole trader, which is a fairly simple process that can be completed in a few days. Learn how at www.orcjamaica.com/services/bus_registration.asp.

Now back to strategic planning. You will need to carve out a niche in order to create a competitive edge because the hairdressing business has low barriers to entry and there are many players offering the same services.

You could, for example, offer a green salon, and treat your customers to all natural, non-toxic, chemical-free hair-care services. Or you could be known as the place to go for styling, managing, and restoring damaged hair - a problem which is prevalent in Jamaica because of widespread abuse of chemical treatments and overuse of weaves.

Another possibility is to focus exclusively on pricing, for example, charging a flat fee of J$1,500 for any service. Offering extended opening hours - early mornings, late evenings, and even public holidays like Independence Day, Heroes Day, and New Year's Day could be another option.

These are just ideas to get you thinking. The key themes are innovation, differentiation, and a strong value proposition. Their importance cannot be overemphasised.

Pay close attention to pleasing your customers and creating an enjoyable experience from start to finish.

You mentioned that your location is central but the parking is limited. Depending on your target market, that could kill your business. If you are targeting professional women who drive, adequate and secure parking is essential as they want convenience and comfort, not stress, when they visit your salon.

Aesthetics, cleanliness and service outcomes, that is, whether customers love their hairstyles, are important in expanding your customer base.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Every detail counts, including proper restroom facilities, cool salon temperature, great design/layout, fast and friendly service, etc.

Remember, in business you only get one chance to make a first impression, so everyday matters.

You will note that I've placed great emphasis on your service. That's because it makes no sense for you to spend money promoting bad service. In fact, no amount of advertising and public relations can mask inferior products or services in this age of social media and growing consumer power.

Once you have properly addressed the above, the crux of your strategic plan will be advertising and promotions.

Unfortunately, I can't say what strategies will be most effective because I don't know your niche, USP, budget or target market. Flyers are my least favourite advertising method because they can be expensive, may not reach the right people, are environmentally unfriendly and relatively ineffective.

I do, however, recommend that you incorporate social media in your marketing efforts, especially Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, which are growing in popularity in Jamaica.

Get professional help for maximum benefit. Try to create a good online portfolio of your work, with quality pictures which can be shared with existing and potential customers.

Also, consider doing video logs on hair-care methods or techniques, new hairstyles, hair-care product reviews, and more.

One love!

Arrests made after fight at McCoy's charity game

HernandezGetty Images

At a time when it appeared that Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez?s advisors had planned to concede the battle in the court of public opinion, his lawyer has broken a prior vow of silence.

Attorney Michael Fee has issued a statement attacking media reports indicating that a warrant has been issued for Hernandez?s arrest on obstruction of justice charges.? Via Wesley Lowery of the Boston Globe, Fee said that Hernandez has been ?the subject of a relentless flood of rumors, misinformation and false reports in the media.?

Fee added that the supposedly false reports ?include repeated publication of supposedly confirmed report an arrest warrant had been issued for Aaron, a report exposed as untrue.?

?None of [the] false reports come from official sources and we appreciate the professionalism and restraint shown by the Bristol County DA,? Fee adds.

For starters, how does Fee know that the ?false reports? aren?t coming from ?official sources.?? And precisely what is an ?official source??

While we have been careful to point out that media reports attributed to unnamed law-enforcement sources should be regarded with skepticism because the unnamed law-enforcement sources may not know the truth or may be selling an untrue version of it for strategic reasons, Fee has no way of knowing that ?officials sources? (whatever they are) haven?t been spreading misinformation.

And if Fee is going to paint with a belated broad brush in disputing the various reports that have created an unflattering tapestry for Hernandez, he needs to back it up with concrete details.? Does he deny that Hernandez destroyed his cell phone?? Does he deny that Hernandez destroyed his home-surveillance system?? Does he deny that Hernandez hired a cleaning crew to ?scrub? his house the day after the murder of Odin Lloyd.

It?s not enough, at this stage of the game, to complain generally about untrue reports.? Fee needs to list the reports he claims are false, and he needs to explain why they?re false.

But that won?t happen.? Fee says he?ll have no further comment.

Until, of course, his next comment.

HP announces Slate 21 AIO, a $400 21.5-inch Android tablet with Tegra 4

HP launches Slate 21 AIO, 215inch Android tablet with Tegra 4

What do you do if your home turf of PC sales is being eroded by tablets? If your answer is "sell tablets as desktops," then you're on Meg Whitman's wavelength. At an event in Beijing, HP announced a 21.5-inch, Android-powered tablet that's expressly designed as a desktop unit. The HP Slate 21 AIO comes with a full-HD touchscreen and NVIDIA's Tegra 4 internals, running Android 4.2.2. Prospective owners won't need to purchase an artists' easel, however, as there's a handy rear kickstand that'll let you stand it upright or at a 30-ish degree angle (pictured after the break), making us hope that its digitizer is sensitive enough for pen-based drawing. There's no word on pricing or availability, but there's a press release, translated from Chinese, after the break, if you'd like to know more.

Update: You'll now find the English-language PR after the break. The unit will launch in the US in September at a starting price of $400.

Huawei Ascend P6 review: a beautiful handset, but performance is lacking

Huawei Ascend P6 review great design but performance is lacking

Well, what do we have here? Okay, let's scrap the faux surprise. The recently confirmed Ascend P6 has landed, and Huawei hopes it will stir interest in the hearts of mobile users. Debuting across Europe, China and Australia in late June / early August with a €449 ($600) price tag, it's asking you to take it seriously, and that's what we'll do.

The mobile market is a fickle place, so it doesn't matter where you are right now; it's all about where you're going. Huawei? Well, it's definitely got its sights set on an upward trajectory. The Ascend P6 is the latest rung on the ladder, intended to elevate the company to mobile greatness. But, with competition stiffer than ever, can it really call a device with a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 720p display and 8-megapixel camera a flagship? (For its P-series at least?) Huawei's certainly giving it a try, and it's hoping that beauty, not brawn, will win the day.

World stocks fall after China aims at shadow loans

BANGKOK (AP) ? Global stock markets reeled Monday, with Shanghai's index enduring its biggest loss in four years, after China allowed commercial lending rates to soar in a move analysts said was aimed at curbing a booming underground lending industry.

Analysts say the spike late Thursday in the country's interbank lending rate to over 13 percent was part of an effort to trim off-balance-sheet lending that could threaten the financial stability of the world's second-largest economy.

But markets feared the move could also hurt economic growth. China's major state-owned banks are unwilling to lend to any but their biggest clients, so the vast majority of smaller businesses must rely on informal lending.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index plummeted 5 percent to 1,968.51 while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index plunged 6.1 percent to 881.87.

Britain's FTSE 100 dropped 1.5 percent to 6,067.35. Germany's DAX fell 1.1 percent to 7,704.88. France's CAC-40 fell 1.5 percent to 3,601.88.

Wall Street also appeared headed for losses, with Dow Jones industrial futures down 0.7 percent to 14,614. S&P 500 futures lost 0.7 percent to 1,573.70.

On Monday, the central bank told China's commercial lenders to focus on lending to the "real economy" rather than financial speculation. A statement on the bank's website made no mention of informal banking but told lenders to do a better job of forecasting credit and liquidity needs.

The government's Xinhua News Agency said in a commentary that Chinese banks had been taking growing risks by diverting money into speculative investments and largely unmonitored underground banking.

"It is not that there is no money but that the money is being put in the wrong place," the government's Xinhua News Agency said in a commentary. "The more important question to consider is not whether there is a shortage of money but how it is being used."

Analysts at Moody's Investors Service said that they interpret the central bank's action as "having been the result of a conscious decision" to curb credit growth.

Moody's added that a prolonged credit crunch could threaten Chinese companies, "especially those in the private sector with weak credit quality, because it heightens the risk that banks will scale back lending to those companies." Moody's says that China's central government finances remain strong, but that rapid credit growth and liabilities at the local level pose a threat to growth.

Andrew Sullivan of Kim Eng Securities in Hong Kong said China's new leaders want credit to be available to keep the economy moving but not so much as to promote asset bubbles.

"After six months in power, the new leadership is putting its policies in place. It's signaling that credit is going to remain tight," Sullivan said. "All that is in line with moving China from being an export driven economy to being a domestic consumption economy."

Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 2.2 percent to 19,813.98. Japan's Nikkei 225 index, the regional heavyweight, fell 1.3 percent to 13,062.78. South Korea's Kospi lost 1.3 percent to 1,799.01. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 1.5 percent at 4,666.50.

Among individual stocks, Australia's Newcrest Mining Ltd. tumbled 7.9 percent. Shanghai-listed Poly Real Estate Group, China's top real estate developer, nosedived the daily limit of 10 percent.

In energy markets, benchmark oil for August delivery was down 54 cents to $93.15 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.71 to close at $93.69 in New York on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3103 from $1.3139 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 98.04 yen from 97.76 yen.

Exclusive: Men's Wearhouse founder clashed with CEO, mulls comeback

By Nadia Damouni and Siddharth Cavale

(Reuters) - Tensions started rising at Men's Wearhouse Inc over the past six months, as founder and executive chairman George Zimmer increasingly butted heads with his handpicked CEO over the clothing retailer's strategy.

CEO Doug Ewert wanted to sell the company's K&G Fashion Superstore business, while Zimmer wanted to keep it, two sources familiar with the situation said. Zimmer also objected to rising compensation for top executives, including Ewert, while the board thought it was appropriate, the sources said.

Zimmer, who is known to U.S. TV audiences for his advertising catch phrase "you're gonna like the way you look - I guarantee it," was seen by company directors to be undermining Ewert's authority, the sources said.

Last week, the Men's Wearhouse board abruptly fired Zimmer from the chairman's job, even as its share price had climbed about 50 percent in the past two-and-a-half years. The board, populated by some directors Zimmer has known for decades, told him of the decision the day they announced the firing, the sources said.

Zimmer, who was shocked by the decision, quit the board on Monday, and is now mulling his options, they added.

While Zimmer is still unclear what those options might be, an attempt to stage a comeback at the company is possible. He is talking to his advisers, including legal counsel Cooley LLP, but a decision is not imminent, the sources said.

Industry bankers and lawyers said these options could involve teaming up with private equity firms to launch a buyout bid or trying to wage a proxy battle with the help of shareholder activists or institutional investors.

"Typically a founder will not leave the company that easily as he thinks it is his baby," said Larry Cagney, a partner at law firm Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, which is not involved in the situation.

Spokesmen for both Men's Wearhouse and Zimmer, who founded the clothing chain in 1973, declined to comment. Ewert was unavailable for comment.

CUSTOMERS UPSET

Men's Wearhouse, based in Fremont, California, operates more than 1,100 stores under the Men's Wearhouse, Moores and K&G brands. The stores sell suits, tuxedos and other articles of clothing.

The story behind Zimmer's surprising exit, which has not been previously reported, adds a new twist to an unfolding corporate drama that has riveted investors, employees and the broader public. The company's Facebook page, for example, was filled with customers urging his return.

"You have lost my business. I guarantee it," wrote Ed Elias, of Lauderhill, Fla.

"Every time I read a post from Men's Wearhouse, I read it in George Zimmer's voice," wrote David Coy, of San Antonio, Texas, in reference to the founder's raspy baritone.

Founders of other companies who have faced similar situations have had mixed success in taking back the reins of their firms. Last year, for example, Best Buy Co Inc's former chairman Richard Schulze tried to buy the electronics retailer with the help of private equity firms. He failed in that bid, but managed to find his way back on the board 10 months later. He now serves as Best Buy's chairman emeritus.

Schulze, however, had owned about 20 percent in Best Buy.

The Zimmer family's combined equity stake of about 4.7 percent - Zimmer holds about 3.5 percent - is not large enough on its own to pressure the company to allow him to return.

He also has no provision in his employment contract that compensates him following the ousting. A licensing agreement will award him $250,000 for each of the next four years if Men's Wearhouse continues to use his image in advertising.

BOARDROOM DRAMA

Zimmer's spectacular downfall was all the more unexpected because he had picked Ewert, who had worked at the company for nearly two decades, as his successor two years ago. The two shared offices next to each other, but the relationship started to unravel in recent months, the sources said.

One of the issues that led to Zimmer's ouster was his growing concern about rising compensation for the top executives, which he opposed.

Ewert was awarded a base salary of $1.25 million for the current year, more than double last year's figure, and a potential annual bonus of up to $1.25 million and other incentives.

Under Ewert, the company's revenue grew to $2.48 billion last year, up from $2.01 billion the year before. In its most recent quarter, it posted better-than-expected results, with sales rising 5.1 percent to $616.5 million.

Another sticking point between Zimmer and the board was the sale of K&G, a clothing retailer that Men's Wearhouse bought in 1999. K&G has been underperforming and Ewert hired investment bank Jefferies to sell it, while Zimmer was not convinced, the sources said.

Soon these tensions came to a head, and the board unanimously decided to oust Zimmer, taking both investors and the founder by surprise, the sources said.

Over the years Zimmer has built a loyal following among some of the company's 17,500 employees.

"Zimmer makes us feel like family," said a Men's Wearhouse store manager who has met the founder several times but requested anonymity for fear of losing his job.

The store manager said Zimmer often visited the store and talked to customers. "He is an awesome guy, and for a company like this to come and fire him, is ridiculous."

Men's Wearhouse has not given any reason for Zimmer's dismissal. In May, it had nominated the founder for re-election to the board, but the June 19 annual shareholder meeting was rescheduled after his ouster.

Among Men's Wearhouse directors is Deepak Chopra, the new age guru. Over the years, Chopra has taught Zimmer not to be upset about the vagaries of life, one of the sources said.

Chopra could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Last week, Chopra told Reuters in a statement that he was "very excited about the future of the company" and that he would "totally support our CEO Doug Ewert and the management team of the Men's Wearhouse."

Family seeks answers in death near Hernandez home | Sports | The ...

Hernandez Police Football

STEVEN SENNE/ASSOCIATED PRESS New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez (81)'s home was visited by State and local police this week.

STEVEN SENNE ? AP

BOSTON -- At least one company yanked an endorsement deal from New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on Friday as puzzled family members of a friend found slain a mile from Hernandez's home sought answers about how he died.

Police have searched in and around Hernandez's sprawling home in North Attleborough, not far from where the Patriots practice, but a court clerk said that as of Friday afternoon no arrest warrants had been issued in the case. The Bristol County district attorney has not released any information, other than saying the death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd was being treated as a homicide.

A jogger found Lloyd's body in an industrial park Monday. Family members said Friday that Lloyd had been dating Hernandez's fiancee's sister for about two years. They said the two men were friends who were together the night Lloyd died.

Police in nearby Providence, R.I., said they had assisted Massachusetts state police and North Attleborough police with activity related to the Hernandez investigation at a strip club named Club Desire. It was unclear if they believed Lloyd and Hernandez might have been at the club in the days before Lloyd died. A reporter was escorted out of the club Friday afternoon before she could speak with employees or patrons.

Family members have said Lloyd, 27, was never in trouble.

"I want the person that killed my son to be brought to justice," said Lloyd's mother, Ursula Ward. "That's my first-born child, my only boy child, and they took him away from me. ... I wouldn't trade him for all the money in the world. And if money could bring him back I would give this house up to bring my son back. Nothing can bring my son back."

Family members said they had heard from Lloyd's girlfriend but not from Hernandez after Lloyd's death. They are anxiously awaiting an arrest in the case.

"We're just hoping for justice," cousin Marsha Martin said. "We don't want Odin to have died in vain."

Hernandez's attorney Michael Fee has acknowledged media reports about the state police search of his Hernandez's home but said he wouldn't have any comment on it.

Attleboro District Court clerk magistrate Mark E. Sturdy said three search warrants were issued in the investigation earlier in the week but have not been returned, meaning they're not public. He said no arrest warrants had been filed in state courts by the time court closed at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Hernandez was gone from his home for most of the day Friday, including when two state police officers knocked on his door. He returned home with his attorney around 5 p.m.

Patriots spokesman Stacey James has said the team does not anticipate commenting publicly during the police investigation. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was waiting for the legal process to take its course.

CytoSport, a Benicia, Calif.-based company that makes Muscle Milk and other supplements for athletes, said Friday it was ending Hernandez's endorsement contract, effective immediately, because of the investigation.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. Since then, he has combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April but is expected to be ready for training camp. Last summer, the Patriots gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.

Hernandez said after he was drafted that he had failed a drug test while with the Gators and had been upfront with NFL teams about the issue.

Earlier this week, a man filed a lawsuit in South Florida claiming Hernandez shot him in the face after they argued at a strip club there.

Alexander Bradley's lawsuit accuses Hernandez of negligence, among other things, suggesting that the shooting may have been accidental. Bradley said he lost his right eye and suffers many other lingering effects from the shooting.

A spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County sheriff's office said Friday that investigators would need to speak with Bradley to move forward with a criminal investigation and cannot rely on the claims he made in his lawsuit. The spokeswoman, Teri Barbera, said Bradley repeatedly refused to cooperate in the criminal probe after he was shot in February, telling detectives he didn't know who shot him.

Hernandez's attorney did not respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit.

The Red Queen was right: Life must continually evolve to avoid extinction

June 20, 2013 ? The death of individual species shouldn't be the only concern for biologists worried about animal groups, such as frogs or the "big cats," going extinct. A University of California, Berkeley, study has found that a lack of new, emerging species also contributes to extinction.

"Virtually no biologist thinks about the failure to originate as being a major factor in the long term causes of extinction," said Charles Marshall, director of the UC Berkeley Museum of Paleontology and professor of integrative biology, and co-author of the report. "But we found that a decrease in the origin of new species is just as important as increased extinction rate in driving mammals to extinction."

The effects of such a decrease would play out over millions of years, Marshall said, not rapidly, like the global change Earth is experiencing from human activities. Yet, the findings should help biologists understand the pressures on today's flora and fauna and what drove evolution and extinction in the past, he added.

The results, published June 20 in the journal Science Express, come from a study of 19 groups of mammals that either are extinct or, in the case of horses, elephants, rhinos and others, are in decline from a past peak in diversity. All are richly represented in the fossil record and had their origins sometime in the last 66 million years, during the Cenozoic Era.

The study was designed to test a popular evolutionary theory called the Red Queen hypothesis, named after Lewis Carroll's character who, in the book "Through the Looking Glass," described her country as a place where "it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place."

In biology, this means that animals and plants don't just disappear because of bad luck in a static and unchanging environment, like a gambler losing it all to a run of bad luck at the slot machines. Instead, they face constant change -- a deteriorating environment and more successful competitors and predators -- that requires them to continually adapt and evolve new species just to survive.

Though the specific cause of declining originations and rising extinctions for these groups is unclear, the researchers concluded that the mammals' death was not just dumb luck.

"Each group has either lost, or is losing, to an increasingly difficult environment," Marshall said. "These groups' demise was at least in part due to loss to the Red Queen -- that is, a failure to keep pace with a deteriorating environment."

Marshall and former UC Berkeley post-doctoral fellow Tiago Quental found that the animal groups were initially driven to higher diversity until they reached the carrying capacity of their environment, or the maximum number of species their environment could hold. After that, their environment deteriorated to the point where there was too much diversity to be sustained, leading to their extinction.

"In fact, our data suggest that biological systems may never be in equilibrium at all, with groups expanding and contracting under persistent and rather, geologically speaking, rapid change," he said.

Marshall and Quental, who is now at the University of Sao Paolo, Brazil, will present their results in two talks this Saturday, June 22, at the Evolution 2013 meeting in Snowbird, Utah.

Hotwire reveals that major cities in peak season are bucking trend ...

Hotwire.com?, a leading discount travel site, today revealed its list of top five Fourth of July deal destinations. Since Independence Day falls on a Thursday, travelers can get the biggest bang for their buck by lengthening their holiday with a four or five day weekend. To help Americans get that extra vacation this year, several major cities that typically see high prices during this holiday are instead topping the list of price drops. With the break less than two weeks away, these deals will help guide travelers toward destinations where they can get their fireworks and festivities at a discount.

?Independence Day is of course a very popular ? and often expensive ? holiday, but there are several big cities that are actually cheaper than last year, resulting in some deep savings for those hoping to plan an affordable and fun getaway,? said Pierre-Etienne Chartier, Vice President of the Hotwire Group. ?Many of these cities are business hubs as well, and since there will likely be reduced travel for the work week, hotels are dropping prices in order to attract leisure travelers. The discounts we?re seeing this year are worth celebrating, and now travelers can extend their stays instead of their travel budgets.?

Among the best destinations to score a deal for the holiday are Chicago, Portland, Boston, Seattle and Los Angeles. Those looking for big-city deals in the U.S. need look no further than Chicago, which is offering an 11 percent price drop this Fourth of July compared to last year. June was an especially busy (and expensive) month for Chicago due to conventions, but since the Fourth disrupts business travel, people should find deep discounts. By staying through the weekend, visitors can catch a Cubs game and enjoy the annual fireworks display at the Navy Pier.

Next on the list is Portland, OR, down 10 percent from last year. Many Portland-area residents use the holiday to spend their time in the great outdoors, causing hoteliers to drop prices to attract more business to the city. Visitors to Portland can kick-off their Fourth with the Waterfront Blues Festival in the downtown area or head to Oaks Amusement Park for family-friendly activities and a larger-than-life fireworks show.

Rounding out the deal destinations for the Fourth of July holiday are Boston (seven percent drop), Seattle (five percent drop) and Los Angeles (three percent drop). All three are already-popular destinations that are even sweeter given the drops in hotel prices, especially Boston which often is one of the most visited 4th of July destinations. Each of these cities sees plenty of business travel, but with the holiday cutting the business week short, hotels are dropping their prices to help fill rooms. The city of Boston will host its 31st annual Harborfest and its 40th annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular this year ? two must-sees for visitors. Seattle boasts an impressive fireworks display on Lake Union, the Seafair Summer Fourth festival in Gas Works Park and the Seattle International Beer Festival at Fisher Pavilion. Finally, the skies of Los Angles will be glowing with fireworks in a variety of locations ? like the Rose Bowl, Disneyland and the Queen Mary.

WASHINGTON More than three-quarters (81.8 percent) of unscheduled admissions to the hospital now come through the emergency department, which is a sharp increase from the previous decade when only 64.5 percent of unscheduled admissions came through the ER. A study, published early online this week in the journal Medical Care, re-confirms recent findings by the RAND Corporation highlighting the growing role emergency physicians play in health care beyond the emergency department ("Changes in the Source of Unscheduled Hospitalizations in the United States").

"Although generally sicker, patients admitted to the hospital from the emergency department had lower mortality and shorter hospital stays than patients admitted directly from the community," said lead study author Keith Kocher, MD, MPH, of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. "The ER was the source of admission for a wide variety of clinical conditions, from medical and surgical disease to mental illness. It was also the source of admission for more vulnerable populations like the elderly, minorities and the uninsured."

Dr. Kocher and his team compared hospital admissions over a 10-year period, from 2000 through 2009, using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample. Admissions through the emergency department increased substantially at the expense of direct admissions from clinics or doctors' offices which declined from 31 percent to 14 percent of unscheduled admissions.

"Our study and the RAND study demonstrate that the emergency department has become the major portal for unscheduled hospitalizations," said Dr. Kocher. "Administrators and policy makers would be advised to focus their attention on physicians and caregivers in the emergency department who make more and more of these decisions to admit. As acute care management continues to evolve away from primary care providers, this trend also has the potential to exacerbate an already fragmented U.S. health care system."
