Home Remodeling ? Things Every Homeowner Should Consider ...

If you?re thinking about moving ahead with a home remodeling project, the following are some factors to consider. This is tried and true advice gleaned from over 25 years of consulting with clients in Toronto on home buying, moving, selling and renovating. It will not only save you financially, but emotionally as well.

Speaking of emotions . . .

Toronto Home Remodeling: Can Your Family Afford the Emotional Cost?

There is an old idiomatic expression in the real estate industry that goes, ?Renovation leads to separation.? This is especially true if the family inhabits the home while the renovation is taking place. Noise, dust, cramped quarters and dealing with unreliable contractors take a huge toll on even the most stable relationship. This is added stress on top of professional responsibilities, child rearing and other day-to-day pressures.

This is why I have always found that the most important factor to consider when deciding whether or not to renovate is not the financial cost, but the emotional cost.

After all, what good is a newly renovated home when there is no family left intact to enjoy it?

Toronto Home Remodeling: When It Makes Sense to Move Forward

If your family is prepared to weather the emotional toll, following is when it makes sense to move forward with a home remodeling project.

You Love Your Home: This is probably the best reason.

If you love the basic bones of your house, its location, and the feel of the neighborhood, then remodeling makes sense ? if it?s within reason (which we?ll discuss in just a bit).

The Costs are in Line with the Neighborhood: You can easily spend too much on a home renovation project.

Following are two questions to ask that will help you keep costs in line with your desires.

The first question you need to ask ? and answer ? before proceeding is, ?Does it make sense to spend this amount of money, on this home, in this area?? You want to be able to answer ?yes? emphatically.

The second question is, ?When all the work is done, will my home be the most expensive home on the street?? The answer to this question should be ?no.?

The reason is, any improvements you make should be those that a future buyer will be willing to pay for.

Rarely is this the case when a home is the most expensive on the block. Remember, potential homebuyers pay relative to what other homes in that vicinity have sold for. So no matter how much that slate tile in the master bath costs or how great it looks, if it puts your home in the ?most expensive? category, it?s unlikely you?ll recoup what you spent.

Toronto Home Remodeling: Make Sure Moving Is Not a Better Option

As renovating can get expensive ? quick ? sometimes it makes sense to move. To illustrate, consider this: let?s say you own a beautiful two-bedroom, semi-detached home on a lovely, quiet street. You need a third bedroom and would like to have a family room on the ground floor. You?d also like a pool.

Do you think it would be a good idea to have all of these changes and additions done to your existing home? My experienced opinion is, ?Probably not.? Why?

These are significant changes. You?re not remodeling, you?re rebuilding. In real estate speak, changes like this make you a classic ?move-up buyer?; one who wants a detached home with a private driveway and a larger lot size. It would be better to buy a home with these features than remodel your existing one.

Toronto Home Remodeling: Get First-hand Advice before Making a Final Decision

No matter what your decision, get some helpful first-hand advice before making it. Seek out the following three people:

(i) an experienced, local real estate agent. They?ll be able to advise you on tangibles like resale value;

(ii) someone who has gone through a similar home remodelling project. They?ll be able to tell you what to expect, eg, cost, how long it?s going to take, recommend contractors, etc.; and

(iii) a contractor who can provide you total costs for your Toronto home remodeling project.

Kodak to stop making cameras, digital frames (AP)

ROCHESTER, N.Y. ? Kodak says it will stop making digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames in order to focus on its more profitable businesses.

The storied photography company, which filed for bankruptcy protection last month, says it will phase out those product lines in the first half of this year.

Eastman Kodak Co.'s consumer business will focus on photo printing and desktop inkjet printers.

Kodak says it's working with its retailers to ensure an orderly transition. The company will continue to honor product warranties and provide technical support for the discontinued products.

The moves are expected to result in annual savings of more than $100 million. The Rochester, N.Y., company expects to take a charge of about $30 million related to the decision.

fd369.com ? Blog Archive ? 10 Top Tennis Strategies for Coaching ...

Mini Tennis, Pee Wee Tennis, Tiny Tots Tennis, Little Mozzies! Coaching Junior Beginners has been called everything. The bottom line for tennis coaches is the fact that using a strong beginner tennis coaching program is the key to a long term sustainable business operation.

Putting together a thrilling and challenging tennis coaching program for the young player ought to be important for any serious coach. These young beginners likewise need some kind of special coaching methods to teach them to love tennis and stay in the game.

Tip 1 ? Success equals Confidence equals Fun! Junior tennis is in the recreation business and coaches are fighting to draw in young athletes towards the sport to ensure that grass roots programs flourish and we produce players in the elite level. Be constantly positive; play fun games which all players can succeed; create an atmosphere at the club that parents and kids can also enjoy. Do your very best to help keep children in tennis for a lifetime.

Tip 2 ? Use modified tennis equipment. This relates to tip number one because by utilizing lower nets, softer balls, lighter tennis racquets and fun equipment we can help our students succeed and therefore enjoy tennis.

Tip 3 ? Use cones to position players. Use cones or spots to position students for games and activities. This can give them a reference point and prevent them from wondering off.

Tip 4 ? Refer to the names of lines and areas of the court. Use the names of lines and areas of a legal court when giving directions. This can provide a ?full? tennis education and help when playing matches afterwards.

Tip 5 ? Demonstrate before you explain the drill. Young kids are fantastic learners. They learn best from observing and copying; in addition to experimenting and feeling how something works. Inside your tennis lessons provide the players plenty of visual coaching and also have them shadow swing so they can have the correct stroke. This will be far more effective than trying to explain to a child with a very short attention span who might not completely understand this is of your words.

Tip 6 ? Do not get too technical! This relates to tip # 5. Technical instruction is wasted on young children but they do understand simple distinctions. For instance using higher or lower; softer or harder; left or right are effective words to steer a player. This is one reason why the use of targets and cones could be a very valuable coaching tool.

Tip 7 ? Use targets for college students to aim at. The reason behind using targets is to compel players to make use of control over power. Many young players will associate success with how quickly and far they can hit the ball. Studies have shown that in sports that require both speed and precision (like tennis) it?s advisable to learn slow, controlled moves and then make them faster; than learn fast uncontrolled moves and them slow them down. By hitting accurate controlled shots our players will end up better at rallying (that ought to be foremost goal associated with a program.)

Tip 8 ? Do not take private lessons too early. Although some parents will expect us to decorate up inside a clown suit and entertain a 4 or 5 years old in a private lesson it?s inappropriate at this age. The children at this age benefit from the excitement of playing with their friends and social interaction ? the coach will quickly become weary and lose passion for their job.

Tip 9 ? Progress the program. Keep giving the students a reason to return towards the game. Progress from the mini court to full court; a mini racquet to a graduate racquet; low compression balls to championship balls; a Half hour lesson to some 45 minute lesson. Keep challenging the scholars or they?ll feel they are not improving and find another sports which offers a pathway.

Tip 10 ? Allow them to play the game. As coaches we are trying to teach players the sport of tennis. When the fundamentals have been taught modified action should become a focus. While in a early age striking the ball over the net seems miraculous, and returning a hopeless dream; allow the students test out a modified rally. The coach might help or make special rules therefore it remains enjoyable and the students may feel some success.

Posting your comment.

Could Russia leave US astronauts stranded in space?

A leaky Soyuz descent capsule means that astronauts aboard the International Space Station will have to wait another six weeks before returning home. And private resupply missions are not ready for prime time.

A botched pressure test of a Russian space capsule slated to launch the next crew to the International Space Station has forced NASA and its partners to delay the planned liftoff for more than a month.

The Russian Soyuz spacecraft launch was originally slated for March 29, but now is targeted for no earlier than May 15, NASA's International Space Station program manager?Mike Suffredini told reporters today (Feb. 2).

The Soyuz's crew capsule, one of three modules that make up the entire Soyuz TMA-04M vehicle, ?has been scrapped after an accident during testing caused it to spring a leak in one of its descent module's rocket thruster fuel tanks. Now Russia's main space contractor, RSC Energia, is readying the next spaceship on the line, though the issue will cause a lengthy delay.

"This particular event is very unfortunate, but you know this is a complicated business and things happen," Suffredini said. "To me this is not indicative of some overarching problem at the Energia corporation. I have every confidence that they'll figure out the cause of this and rectify it for the future."?[Russia's Manned Soyuz Space Capsule Explained (Infographic)]

With the retirement of NASA's space shuttle fleet last year, Russia's three-person Soyuz space capsules are currently the only vehicle available to ferry American astronauts to and from the International Space Station. NASA plans to eventually use private U.S.-built commercial spacecraft to transport crews and cargo to the station, but those new vehicles are still years away from being ready.

Meanwhile, NASA is contemplating another delay ? in this case, of the unmanned SpaceX Dragon capsule's inaugural trip to deliver supplies to the space station. The private spacecraft was due to make its first test launch to the orbiting laboratory on Feb. 7, but Suffredini said the latest target date is March 20, and even that might be a stretch, as the vehicle still requires more testing and some minor fixes.

The faulty Soyuz capsule was slated to carry NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin up to the space station to begin long-duration stays.

They were due to replace three of the Expedition 30 spaceflyers currently living on the outpost: NASA astronaut Dan Burbank?and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin.

However, because of the Soyuz issues, NASA and Russia have decided to extend the current crew's mission to keep the space station running smoothly. Those three were scheduled to return to Earth March 16, but now will come home April 30.

The delay is also likely to cause rippling setbacks in other planned launches and landings later this year.

The 'Choking Game': 1 in 7 College Kids Has Tried It (Time.com)

College students aren't necessarily renowned for their good judgment, and a new study reinforces that, finding that nearly one in seven co-eds has played the Choking Game, which is every bit as dangerous as it sounds.

Also called the Fainting Game, Pass Out, or Space Monkey, the Choking Game can be played individually or in groups. It consists of manually choking yourself or others, sticking a plastic bag over the head, tying a string around the neck or hyperventilating, all in search of a few seconds of euphoria. (See TIME's health and medicine covers.)

Researchers at The Crime Victims' Institute at Sam Houston State University surveyed 837 students at a Texas university and found that the behavior, which works by cutting off blood flow to the brain in order to induce a high, was frighteningly commonplace:

?16% of students said they'd played the game, and three-quarters more than once
?On average, students first played the game at age 14
?Males were more likely to have played than females
?90% of students who had played the game learned about it from friends, and most students said they first played in a group

Why in the world would kids engage in this potentially deadly behavior? In a word, curiosity. They may also not realize it has the potential to be just as deadly as illegal drugs. The good news is that learning that a number of teens and college students have suffocated to death from playing the Choking Game helped deter students from playing. Parents, talk to your kids. And schools can play a role too: related research found that 90% of parents think that including information about the dangers of the game in school health and drug prevention classes is a smart idea.(MORE: For Teens Who Cut, Going Online Can Sometimes Help)

As the study notes:

"This 'game,' as it is often called, does not require obtaining any drugs or alcohol, is free, and can go undetected by many parents, teachers, physicians, and other authority figures. Most importantly, many of those who engage in this activity, do not understand that the practice can be just as deadly as the illegal substances youth have been warned against."
