YouTube Video Puts Police On Chase For Wrestling Coach Suspected of Sexual Abuse

As of this moment, the Los Angeles County Sheriff?s Department is trying to track down 29-year-old Hector Daniel Ortiz, of Baldwin Park, Calif., founder of the Bad News Panthers youth wrestling club in nearby Rosemead. Ortiz, who has also served as a high school wrestling coach in California and Virginia, is suspected of sexually abusing a 14-year-old. The case broke open in a very modern way. From a release issued by the L.A. County sheriff (the excerpt is exactly as it was posted):

Investigators were told of the alleged abuse by a victim?s mother. She said she had been alerted to a ?Youtube? video on the internet. In the video, another male alleged he was victimized by the suspect and was warning viewers, specifically those residing in Rosemead, California, to protect their children. The mother recognized the suspect as a former assistant wresting coach at Rosemead High School and asked her 14-year old son if he had been a victim. Her son then disclosed the sexual abuse by the suspect.

The crimes occurred in the cities of Rosemead, El Monte and Baldwin Park.

During follow-up investigation, detectives learned that the suspect had knowledge that the ?Youtube? video had been posted to the internet.

I have looked for the video and cannot find it. If you happen to see it, please let me know in the comments below.

In recent times, there has been a high school student outing her sexual abusers (who were athletes in her school) on Twitter, and, on YouTube, 16-year-old Damon Moetler has posted a series of videos in which he describes himself in hiding from his sexually abusive father, and tries to pressure authorities into charging him (so far courts have found no evidence Damon?s father abused him).

In most cases, the issue is that a child victim of sexual abuse is afraid to tell anybody. I?m no psychologist, but it seems social media provides a combination of telling nobody and telling everybody that is making a few people more comfortable about speaking out. After all, while what is said will be broadcast to the world, the actual act of writing a tweet or making a YouTube video can be a very solitary, private thing. It?s not the pressure of talking to parents, or talking to police ? it?s a chance to say what you want to say, setting the terms of your own story, with no one to stop you. I suspect Herbert Ortiz is only the first of many accused abusers who end up on the run because of a warning shot fired on social media.
