e+o Food and Drink: e+o Food and Drink Restaurant Opens in ...

I live in Evanston, and while I love checking out the newest restaurants and bars in Chicago, there are nights I?m just not up for dealing with traffic, high parking fees, crowded trains or any of the other stressors that too often come with a trip into the city. Luckily the suburban dining scene has been heating up to cater to foodies like me. One of the newest spots, e+o Food and Drink, is so good even city-dwellers will want to look for an excuse to check it out.

The name of the new spot from veteran chef Rodelio Aglibot of Chicago restaurant Sunda and TLC?s Food Buddha stands for earth plus ocean and the d?cor reflects that theme. Bright colored glass bottles and candles are on display up front near the restaurant?s wine collection. Lights loosely shaped like branches hang over the upfront bar, where you can watch sports on TV or the sushi chefs at work. Grass appears in checkered patterns on the walls and small silver stones reminiscent of bubbles hang over the turquoise booths sitting in front of blue walls. I?m super excited to come back when their patio opens later this year.

The beverage program focuses on domestic beer and wine, with a small but solid selection of bottles mostly from California and Oregon and drafts including Deschutes Chainbreaker and Metropolitan?s Krankshaft. You?ll also find fresh ingredients mixed in cocktails like the Strawberry Sling, a blend of vodka, muddled strawberry, mango puree and lime that tastes like a strawberry ice pop melted in a martini glass.

Pretty much every dish I tried was excellent. The menu offers a mix of small plated and entr?e portions, making it great for ordering a bunch of things and sharing. The prosciutto wrapped burrata is like condensing a charcuterie plate into one delicious bite. The roasted duck adds Asian flare to a French dish, taking super crisp duck confit in an awesome sauce and serving it with a gooey fried daikon radish cake.

I?m not usually a fan of kale, but the crispy Brussels sprouts and kale appetizer is amazing. Servers add the dressing tableside to keep it from getting soggy and the crispy greens are given a bit of kick from jalapeno peppers and work wonderfully with pieces of minced shrimp. Aglibot said customers are constantly asking him for the recipe.

While they?ve got a lot of competition from the smaller plates, the entrees are equally excellent. Carnivores will love the tender strip steak served in a chimichurri sauce with crispy potatoes, but the real star is the Malay-style sea bass. One of Aglibot?s signature dishes, the fish has a beautifully crispy crust and is served atop a super creamy cauliflower puree.

If you?re a vegetarian or dining out with one, e+o offers a host of great options. The watermelon sashimi is a perfect summery snack, with the chunk of fruit soaking in sweet and spicy sauces and given extra crunch by being served on a bed of shaved radish. You can also go with the mozzarella roulade, their take on a Caprese salad with basil and crisp lettuce wrapped in cheese and topped with grape tomato. On the entr?e side, the sweet corn linguine resembles an alfredo sauce without being too rich.

You?ll want to save room for dessert and order the warm and gooey carrot-pineapple cake topped with cherry and pineapple compote and the ?Cookie Monster,? a variety of cookies baked in-house served with dips. If you?re too full, just sip a chocolate dumante, a cocktail mixed with pistachio liqueur that tastes like a boozy cookie. With restaurants this good in the ?burbs, the city?s going to have to step up its game.
