Delegation Of Syrian Canadian citizens met with Members of Canadian Parliament; Expressed their Concerns About the Humanitarian Relief and Immigration Issue

On February 2013, a delegation of Canadian citizens representing several Syrian Canadian organizations met with members of Canadian Parliament from the NDP, Liberal, and Conservative parties. The objectives were to highlight the concerns of Syrian Canadian citizens, and to inform elected representatives on the actual situation regarding the Syrian crisis and its ramifications. The meeting focused mainly on the topics of humanitarian relief and immigration.

Addressing the humanitarian concerns, Mr Faisal Alazem, The chair of the media committee- Syrian Canadian Council, said; ? We think that on the humanitarian aid level, Canada?s generosity towards the Syrian people needs to be stepped up to a level similar to what it has been, bravely, demonstrated in all previous humanitarian crises anywhere in the world. ? Moreover, Mr. AlAzem stated facts about Canada?s contribution;? Canada has made a commitment to pledge 4% of the world humanitarian aid; however, in 2012 it accounted only for 2.2% towards Syria. We would like to ask the Canadian government to double its humanitarian aid to $100 million, in accordance with Canada?s traditional levels of humanitarian giving.?

Mr. AlAzem stresses the importance that humanitarian aids to Syria end up in a reliable organization, to ensure fair distribution to people in dire needs; ?Currently, Canada?s humanitarian aid to Syria is being funneled reliable partners, only through UN and Red Cross agencies. However, Canada needs to ensure that none of its aid ends up being funneled to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, as it is suspected of close ties to the Syrian regime.?

Raising concerns over the immigration issue, Mr. Malaz sebai, a member in SEO, said; ?We are looking for the Canadian government to adopt and implement new measures to facilitate immigration, similar to those taken previously during similar humanitarian disasters, like the one in 2005 for the Tsunami, 2007 for Iraq, 2009 for Philippines, and 2010 for Haiti ? Describing the suffering of Syrians, Mr. Saibi, said; ? The last two years of Syrian revolution had impose lot of suffering on every Syrian inside or aboard. Despite this long time plight, yet there is no special immigration law for family reunification or application priority processing have been put in place for Syrians. Moreover, despite months of repeated requests, the Immigration Minister has yet to meet with groups representing concerned Canadian citizens from the Syrian community.?

Talking on the behalf of SCC, Mr. AlAzem, said ?The Syrian Canadian community will continue to work tirelessly to remind the Canadian government that a humanitarian crisis in Syria has reached a catastrophic level; it is time to turn words and principles into action; and we have to adhere to the values and morals that Canadians hold and respect.?
